A complaint I have often heard from new parents is regarding the sometimes conflicting advice that they can hear from Health Care Professionals, often regarding feeding their newborn baby.
There is much information that we convey to new parents that is based on sound evidence and research and of course it is wise for parents to take on board this as they care for their baby. An example of this are the safe sleep recommendations – such as putting babies down to sleep on their backs, ‘feet-to-foot’, etc.
However, for some areas of care parents should be encouraged to listen to all the advice offered and then to use their intuition, good judgement and to make choices that are best for them and their baby. After all, all babies are different and parents have different expectations of what is acceptable in terms of their baby’s care and behaviour.
Underpinning all of this I believe that the majority of parents know and love their baby better than anyone.
