Labour bag

  • Remember your hospital scans, chart of your growth of the womb, hospital notes if you have any
  • Big, cotton T shirt
  • Several pairs of pants
  • Sanitary towels (maternity ones)
  • Isotonic drinks, Lucozade, bottles of water, cartons of juice
  • Some flexible straws
  • Snacks, such as cereal bars, dates, Jelly Babies
  • Sandwich, snacks and drinks for birth partner
  • One pack of dextrose tablets
  • Small hand held battery fan
  • Face cloth
  • Lip salve
  • Baby wipes
  • Flip flops
  • Bikini top/tankini/spare bra if using birthing pool
  • Flotation aids such as woggle, bath pillow
  • CDs or music on mobile for playing in labour
  • Headphones for listening to music or hypnobirthing tracks
  • Own pillow, small blanket
  • Phone numbers for important contacts of family & friends
  • Hot water bottle or microwave wheat bag
  • Coins for car park (£2.60 at PCH)
  • Hair tie if hair is long
  • Water spray/spritz
  • Camera or mobile to take photographs

 

For immediately after the birth:

  • Shower/bath toiletries (shampoo/conditioner, soap/shower gel, deodorant, moisturiser, hairbrush, toothbrush & toothpaste, tissues, etc.)
  • 2 towels
  • Flip flops (from labour)
  • 2 plastic bags – one for wet items and one for dry dirty washing
  • Clean nightie or T shirt, thin cotton dressing gown
  • Pants (disposable if you wish) and sanitary towels
  • Nipple cream if you wish to use
  • Mirror
  • Pen

 

Bag for baby:

  • First size nappies (with indicator line at front to show when baby has passed urine)
  • Cotton wool
  • Short sleeve vests (approx. 4)
  • Long sleeve babygros (approx. 4)
  • Hat (ideally knitted)
  • Scratch mits
  • Bibs if bottle feeding/muslins

 

For going home:

  • Baby car seat plus knitted, cellular or crotched blanket
  • Hat for baby
  • Clothes for mum to go home in
  • Maternity bra and breast pads for from day 3 after the birth
  • Coins for car park
