It has been my personal experience that motherhood has been one of the toughest things that I have done in my life, as well as one of the very best.
Becoming a parent for the first time brings about the biggest life change! It may be something that you planned for, wanted desperately, looked forward to……..but when it happens absolutely everything in your life changes. As much as you love the little human being in your arms, you juggle with a whole host of thoughts and emotions that you feel too ashamed to voice to yourself, let alone to those around you! Your whole identity and your priorities change. Every practical activity, even going to the toilet, has to fit in around your baby. Whilst you had been the centre of attention during your pregnancy, now everyone focuses on the baby.
Is it all bad? No, of course not! From my stage in life now I can look back over 30 years and see how numerous the happy, special and golden moments have been. These far outweigh the difficulties and challenges. To hear your child – whether infant or adult – say that they love you; when your baby smiles at you or later, reaches their arms out to you to be held and cuddled; when they run to meet you from school and you wrap your arms around them; when they pass exams, get that job; fall in love and you see them fly……….. all these things unfold and you would never get to experience them if it were not that you were a parent.
As a parent we make ourselves open to experiencing such strong and powerful difficult emotions as we strive to love, protect and care for our children. However, the scales are tipped to the positive side by the wealth of undeniable blessings that unfold, that money nor possessions could ever bring.
