Birth Stories
Over more than 38 years as a midwife, I have had the honour, privilege and responsibility of supporting many women and their birth partners as they welcomed their babies into the world. I have witnessed births in many different environments and circumstances, and supported families from diverse backgrounds. I have also talked with most probably hundreds of women and their partners after the birth of their baby, as I have cared for them in the postnatal period.
Every woman and every birth partner is unique. Each carries their own hopes, fears, expectations and experiences. Some people prepare extensively for birth, investing considerable time, thought and sometimes money into their preparation. Others prefer to take things as they come.
Through all those years and all those different birth experiences, three things have become very clear to me.
Firstly, a positive birth is not defined by how long labour lasted, the pain relief you had, or whether your baby was born vaginally or by caesarean section. What matters most is how you felt. Did you feel safe? Did you understand your choices and feel supported to navigate them? Were you treated with kindness, dignity and respect? Did you feel listened to and involved? Did you feel that you and your body were able to work at your optimum — whatever that looked like for you?
Secondly, every birth has the potential to be incredible and deeply special.
A water birth with gas and air, a long labour with an epidural, an assisted birth, an unplanned caesarean section, or a planned caesarean section at 39 weeks, an induction of labour or a premature birth — or any one of the countless other journeys a birth can take — can become a precious and life-affirming experience.
And thirdly, small things can make a BIG difference.
Sometimes it is a small action, a few words, or the way someone makes you feel that can cast a shadow over how you remember your birth and may take time and personal work to process and move beyond. Occasionally, parents feel the need to meet with a Birth Reflections service to understand and ‘heal’ from their birth.
The opposite is also true. A small act of kindness, encouragement, understanding, appropriate care or action can transform a moment, change the course of a birth and create a positive experience that stays with you for a lifetime.
These birth stories are as wonderfully individual as the families who have shared them. They are not here to tell you how you should give birth, but to offer glimpses into the many ways a birth journey can unfold – the unexpected, the challenging, the joyful and the extraordinary.
I am truly grateful for every person who has taken the time to share their story. Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability, and for allowing others to glimpse such a deeply personal experience. And thank you, too, for reflecting not only on the birth of your baby, but on how your story might inspire or support another expectant parent as they prepare for their own unique and incredible birth.
Every birth story matters. Every journey is unique. And every baby is, quite simply, a miracle.

Sophia’s Birth Story
I had a fairly straightforward pregnancy, luckily. The first trimester came with terrible nausea and living on crackers and toast, but thankfully that passed around 14 weeks. I really enjoyed my second trimester, while the third was much as expected — getting slightly more uncomfortable by the day. I had…
