BABY AND CHILD FIRST AID CLASSES

Essential baby and child first aid – for accidents, illnesses, life-saving skills and everything in-between!

I strongly believe that everyone who cares for a baby or child should have the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to respond appropriately when a child becomes unwell or is involved in an accident. Whether you are a parent, grandparent, relative, friend, babysitter or childcare professional, understanding how to recognise common childhood illnesses and injuries, knowing how to treat them safely and effectively, and recognising when, and from whom, to seek help and advice – whether that be your GP, 111, going to A&E or making a 999 call – will make a positive difference.

My Baby & Child First Aid classes are designed to equip you with practical, evidence-based knowledge in a welcoming, supportive and hands-on environment, giving you the confidence to stay calm and take the right action when it matters most. I strongly believe that practice creates muscle memory – by physically practicing life-saving skills, you are more likely to remember what to do and feel confident putting those skills into action if they are needed.

Before training as a midwife, I completed a three-year Registered General Nurse (RGN) training in Birmingham. Following qualification, I worked as a staff nurse on the cardiothoracic surgical ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

MY EXPERIENCE

Over the past few years as a midwife, I have taken action to enhance my qualifications, knowledge and skills, including;

  • I completed a 5-day residential training to become a fully qualified first aid instructor with FAA (First Aid Awards)
  • In August 2026 I completed a 2-day First Aid Instructor Re-Qualification course, including an additional Paediatric First Aid Module. This has refreshed and strengthened my knowledge and skills in line with current guidelines and recommendations. I am committed to maintaining the highest standards in my practice, ensuring that the information I share in my first aid classes is accurate, evidence-based and up to date.
  • I have successfully completed the Resuscitation Council UK G.I.C. (Generic Instructors Course) 2-day course in London
  • I am a fully qualified Newborn Life Support (NLS) Instructor. This involves teaching paediatricians, midwives and neonatal nurses the full-day Newborn Life Support course, plus providing 3-hour update sessions to members of the maternity team. I primarily teach at Harlow North West Anglia FT and Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.

To ensure you gain the very best practical experience at your first aid class, I have invested in the latest Laerdal Baby and Child QCPR manikins, alongside additional infant manikins that are ideal for practising the management of choking.

I have 4 Laerdal Little Baby QCPR manikins and 4 Laerdal Little Junior child QCPR manikins, each paired with an individual Laerdal Skill Guide. These advanced training manikins provide instant, real-time feedback on the quality of your chest compressions, measuring their rate, depth and full chest recoil – all of which are essential for delivering effective CPR.

High-quality chest compressions are vital because they help circulate oxygen-rich blood to the brain and heart, giving the best possible chance of survival while also helping to protect brain function and quality of life. Effective rescue breaths are equally important in babies and children, as they provide oxygen to the lungs and ‘breathe’ for the baby or child until they begin breathing for themselves or emergency help arrives.

The real-time feedback from the Skill Guides allows you to see exactly how you are performing and make immediate adjustments, if necessary, helping you develop the confidence, technique and muscle memory needed to deliver effective CPR should you ever need to use these life-saving skills in a real emergency.

The Course Content

At Little Seeds, I cover essential life-saving first aid skills for babies and children, alongside common illnesses and accidents such as bumps and grazes. Our classes are interactive, practical and engaging, giving you the opportunity to learn and practise the skills for yourself. My aim is that you leave feeling informed, confident and better equipped to care for your baby or child should they become unwell or have an accident.

Topics include:

  • Baby or child who is unconscious but breathing
  • Baby or child who is unconscious and not breathing (requiring CPR)
  • Foods and objects that are a choking risk. Recognising and managing choking in a baby or child (I have an Act Fast Anti Choking Vest for practising, as well as the manikins)
  • Sepsis and meningitis – recognising and responding
  • Burns – prevention and treatment
  • Febrile convulsions (which affect 1 in 20 children)
  • Cuts, grazes, bleeding, bruising, broken bones

I follow up our baby and child first aid class with handouts and links to reliable sources of further extended information.

Important to note

My baby and child first aid class is 30 minutes longer than the antenatal classes, running from 6:15pm – 8:45pm. This is due to the practical elements of the session, plus the wide range of key topics to be discussed. We break halfway through the class for refreshments and a chance to chat with others.

Please note that unlike other baby and first aid classes I do not have babies or children attending the sessions. I believe that this promotes a learning environment for all that holds less distractions and enables the maximum benefit for attendees.

Class sizes are limited to ensure that everyone has access in a timely manner to practise with the manikins and for me to ensure that each individual has support as needed.
